Speaker:- Chris Daniels on ‘Why cities need nature’.
Chris explained the ecology of the greater Adelaide area and showed how settlement by white people has changed the ecology enormously. Very little of the original plant and animal diversity of the Adelaide plains remains. Adelaide has only 5.5% green area which is among the lowest in the world for urban green space. Runoff from all the paved area has increased water flowing into the sea by a huge amount killing sea grass and polluting the gulf. Modern housing density of large houses on small blocks and urban infill is compounding the problems. More areas need to be changed to green space by landscaping wide road verges with trees and understory plants.
President G Ruckert presented Chris with a thankyou gift.
