October 2nd 2019
Presentation by Paul Lindon, treasurer of the Heritage Roses Adelaide Group.

  • The Adelaide Heritage Roses Group is part of the National Heritage Roses Group which has 600 members nationally.
  • Paul gave an interesting talk on the 190 species roses that have been hybridised to create the heritage roses now available and some that have been lost over time.
  • Heritage roses are all bred prior to 1930 with some dating back to the 17th century. David Austin roses often resemble Heritage roses but are actually modern hybrids.
  • Many heritage roses bloom only once each season in spring.
  • Rosa persica, a 5 petalled bright yellow rose with a dark red centre and vicious thorns, has recently been used in hybridizing beautiful single roses with a dark ‘eye’. This is the biggest injection of new genes into roses in many centuries.
  • Rosa persica is a pest weed in agriculture in its native Iran.
  • Rose perfume inhibits anxiety, is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and the rose hips are very high in Vitamin C.

During the evening, the following blooms on the competition table were judged as place-getters in their respective classes. Unfortunately, some of the class winners were not able to be successfully photographed.
