Presentation by Joe Romeo - "Breeding begonias"

Joe says…
"I was brought up in a family which was always self sufficient in fruit and vegetables, Dad had a spare block beside our house where we grew everything we consumed. We grew up having to help water the vegetables and tie the tomatoes to their stakes. Dad never grew anything he could not eat and he was in charge of the back and side yard. Mum was allowed to grow her flowers in the front of the house in pots and under the Olive Trees.
After I was Married I had my own garden and purchased a shade-house. I joined the Fuchsia Society and had wall to wall Fuchsias. Of all the begonias, I loved Rexes the best, so I decided to specialise in these. I now hybridise my own, and produce new ones every year.
With beauty surrounding me and having artistic talent I am also inspired to paint my plants.
My philosophy in life is that fruit and vegetables are food for the body, and flowers and ornamental plants are food for the Soul."

The first two images below are from Joe's presentation, while the balance are of selected blooms from place-getters in the monthly competition.
